A sharp error estimate for the fast Gauss transform

We report an error estimate of the multi-dimensional fast Gauss transform (FGT), which is much sharper than that previously reported in the literature. An application to the Karhunen–Loeve decomposition in the three-dimensional physical space is also presented that shows savings of three orders of magnitude in time and memory compared to a direct solver. 2006 Elsevier Inc. A Sharp Error Probability Estimate for the Reconstruction of Phylogenetic Quartets by the Four-Point Method

Despite the continued development of advanced algorithms for phylogeny reconstruction, the assessment of topological accuracy remains a challenging problem. New tools are needed to assist researchers in the prediction and evaluation of phylogenetic performance, particularly when short alignments are considered. We present a probabilistic analysis of quartet accuracy by the four-point method (FP...

An interpolation error estimate in &Ropf2 based on the anisotropic measures of higher order derivatives

In this paper, we introduce the magnitude, orientation, and anisotropic ratio for the higher order derivative ∇k+1u (with k ≥ 1) of a function u to characterize its anisotropic behavior. The magnitude is equivalent to its usual Euclidean norm. The orientation is the direction along which the absolute value of the k + 1-th directional derivative is about the smallest, while along its perpendicul...

Sharp asymptotics of the Lp approximation error for interpolation on block partitions

Adaptive approximation (or interpolation) takes into account local variations in the behavior of the given function, adjusts the approximant depending on it, and hence yields the smaller error of approximation. The question of constructing optimal approximating spline for each function proved to be very hard. In fact, no polynomial time algorithm of adaptive spline approximation can be designed...
